Abstract
Ornithological characterization and evaluation from a nature conservation point of view peat mine lakes in the Hanság. The Hanság basin, which is situated in the north-west corner of Hungary, was a huge moorland in connection with Lake Fertő until the end of the 18th century, when planned drainage has started. Peat mining, which has long been presented in the region, is on the one hand destroys the flora and fauna of the mine area, but on the other hand it gives opportunity to restart the mire succession methods. Writing this paper we have examined the new habitat creating effects of peat mining according to ornithological literature and the results of our own field-works. It has been proved that peat mining generated secondary wetlands have a considerable conservation value if during after-utilization they get adequate water coverage and we let the natural habitat regeneration methods work.
