Abstract

Digitalization is omnipresent and we are constantly confronted with it. The healthcare sector cannot escape this change either. In hospitals, the Hospital Future Law is one of the explicit factors driving these digital solutions forward. The focus has long been on improving the structural quality of care services. In particular, this means the use of various software products that enable digital patient master data management, including the associated documentation. However, encrypted communication with cost bearer and interfaces to the outpatient care sector are also part of digitalization in German hospitals. All of these functions are extremely important. But is it really the case that the advancing digitalization in the German healthcare system only brings benefits for users and patients? Based on fieldwork, which consisted of a qualitative literature review, several studies were compiled that focus on the current state of affairs in German hospitals. The article emphasizes the research question of how far digitalization has progressed in German hospitals to date and whether it only brings benefits for staff and patients. The results are compiled and critically commented on. Finally, a comparison is made with the current state of digitalization in Denmark and what Germany can learn in this regard.
