Absztrakt (kivonat)
Among the species of Shrikes found in the Carpathian Basin, the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor) and the Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) were considered harmful to both gardens and wildlife management. The former species was particularly affected, as it was sometimes shot in significant numbers from autumn to spring. Their perception was not helped by the fact that many false (unimaginable) observations of them were reported in the literature. Even the most important ornithological monographs of the period encouraged their extermination. They could be killed by stalking, by using a lime-twig or hunted by Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo). They were shot in all the counties of historic Hungary, but the largest numbers were typically taken from the plains. The number of shrikes shot annually increased in the manor of Zsombolya and stagnated in Tarnóca, suggesting a stable population. The chicks of the Great Shrike were easily tameable and were sometimes kept indoors. Their legal protection was only introduced in the second half of the 20th century.
